NORMAN — Norman police remain optimistic they will solve the rash of thefts of air conditioners from area homes over the past six weeks.
Police say since November, property owners have reported the thefts of 18 air conditioning units. The thefts have accelerated considerably since the first of the year, according to Capt. Tom Easley.
Easley said a detective has been assigned to the case. Local Realtors and property managers have also been alerted to the thefts.
According to some reports, the person stealing the units approaches vacant homes with “For Rent” or “For Sale” signs and appears to be a legitimate repair person. Instead of making any repairs, however, they simply cut the lines and steal the entire outside unit.
The thefts have occurred on 23rd Avenue, Acacia Street, Barton Street, Cedarcrest Street, Cloverdale Lane, Cristo Court, Dustin Drive, Edgemere Drive, Grill Avenue, Hazelwood Drive, Mockingbird Lane, Northcliff Avenue, Peach Tree Lane, Rambling Oaks Drive, Riverwalk Drive, Shadowridge Drive, Trails Court and Westside Drive.
