In-person absentee voting to begin

NORMAN — Registered voters in Cleveland County who want to vote in Tuesday’s General Election by mail-in absentee in Tuesday’s General Election have missed the application deadline.

“They aren’t out of luck, however,” County Election Board Secretary Jim Williams said Wednesday.

Eligible voters who want to vote early are encouraged to utilize in-person absentee voting at the County Election Board office. That voting gets under way Friday.

In-person absentee polling hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Monday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Absentee voting board personnel will be on duty each day to assist voters at the Cleveland County Election Board, 641 E. Robinson St., Suite 200, in Norman.

“In-person absentee voters fill out an application form when they arrive. They are not required to state a reason for voting in-person absentee,” Williams said. “They are required to swear that they have not voted a regular mail absentee ballot and that they will not vote at their polling places on Election Day.”

Williams said the absentee voting board verifies a voter’s registration information, checks the voter’s identification, then issues the voter’s ballot. The voter marks the ballot in a voting booth and then puts it in the voting device.

According to the release, the Cleveland County Election Board has implemented several measures to accommodate the large volume of voters expected to vote early at the election board office.

“We are doing everything possible to decrease ... the need to stand in line waiting to vote,” Williams said. “Voters will be given a number when they report to the voting area. There will be a seating area for the voters to wait until their number is called and it is their turn to vote.”

Drive-through voting assistance also will be available for voters who are not physically able to enter the polling place.
