NORMAN — Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens will join local businesses and Norman residents Sept. 23 for the fifth annual Thunderbird Clubhouse Golf Tournament at The Trails Golf Club.
A number of local businesses join together to sponsor the scramble-style event that benefits the local nonprofit that helps adults living with mental illness. The event has raised more than $40,000 each of the previous three years.
The Clubhouse began in 1990 and has helped individuals with mental illness return to work, higher education, independent living and a better quality of life. Participants are called members because the focus is on the person’s strengths, not their illness.
“This event is so unique in that golfers not only get to interact with Sooner celebrities like Steve Owens but also with the Thunderbird Clubhouse members,” said Kathryn Walker, board of directors president. “It is an opportunity to raise both funds and awareness about such a powerful organization Norman is fortunate to have.”
Owens has been a staple at the tournament since its inception. His late son, Blake, was a member.
The tournament will feature a lunch at 11 a.m., a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and prizes for the winners at 4 p.m.
Tournament sponsorships are available and range from $125 to $1,000. The cost for a four-person team is $500. Sponsorships at the $1,000 level are eligible for a special drawing and commemorative gift signed by Heisman Trophy winners.
