NORMAN — Award-winning author/illustrator of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series Jeff Kinney is coming to Norman to host a fundraiser benefiting Moore school libraries damaged from the May tornadoes.

“Drawn Together: Cartoonists Benefit Moore, Oklahoma School Libraries” is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Lloyd Noble Center, 2900 S. Jenkins Ave. Doors open at noon. All proceeds generated from the event will be donated to the Moore Public Schools Foundation for their school library collections.

Kinney said the event is a chance for young and old alike to relax, have fun and learn.

“I hope that kids will get inspired. I live in a small town myself, a small town called Plainville, and from here, I’m able to write books and make movies and all the things that I never thought I could do,” he said. “I’m hoping we reach some kids or maybe some grown-ups who might be inspired to chase after their dreams.”

Kinney will be joined by fellow authors Dav Pilkey, of the “Captain Underpants” series, Lincoln Peirce, of the “Big Nate” series, and Stephan Pastis, of the “Timmy Failure” series.

During the event, each author will discuss inspirations and their creative processes for about 15 to 20 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session.

With each author having a slightly different approach to writing, Kinney said the four authors will provide an interesting contrast into the same business.

“Our plan is to present a talk about how we became cartoonists and how we go about our writing and our illustrations,” he said. “It’s not going to be themed on the tornadoes. We’re just going to talk about our craft and hope we can inspire people to become creators.

“And hopefully there’s some writers in the audience who can learn about how to go about getting published.”

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at drawntogetherbenefit.org.

The publishing company for each author has donated 200 autographed books to be sold at the event. Posters featuring artwork from each author also will be for sale. Autographed artwork from each author will be raffled off in addition to other memorabilia.

The event is sponsored by the Metropolitan Library, the Pioneer Library, Universal Uclick, GoComics, Scholastic Books, Abrams Books, HarperCollins Publishers and Candlewick Press.
