Norman should have built recycling center

The Norman Transcript

Editor, The Transcript:

A recent newspaper article stated the Norman residents were way above average in the recycling effort that started in March. Someone from the City offices said that we were at 50 percent, while other cities were at 15 to 30 percent. The article also stated that about 28,000 households were paying $3 per month to cover the cost of recycling. That calculates out to about $1,000,000 per year that the citizens of Norman are paying to keep 360,000 tons of material out of the landfill. The last report I read said this would save about $176,000.00 per year. So the net cost of the recycling is about $800,000 per year.

I think the City said the $3 per month was necessary to pay Waste Management to cover the cost of the trucks the company had to buy to handle our recycling. These trucks will wear out in 5 to 7 years. We will have spent a total of $4,000,000 to $6,000,000 and be no closer to having an updated recycling center to recycle all of the trash.

I am sure that everyone feels better about putting their newspaper in a box and setting it out by the curb and watching the big truck come and take it away. Of course you feel good, you are saving the environment by keeping that paper out of the landfill and keeping trees from being cut down for paper. At the same time this is happening, thousands of tons of construction waste, used metal, old fencing and other recyclables are being sent to the landfill.

The reason that this material is being sent to the landfill is that Norman can't afford a recycling center like they have in Oklahoma City. That facility would cost about $10,000,000. Why didn't we vote on a bond issue to build the type of facility we needed with equipment we needed instead of the package we did vote on. We could have really made a difference, but I guess everyone feels good and what's a million dollars against people feeling good?
