Mayor coverage questioned

Editor, The Transcript:

I find very troubling the Transcript's coverage of Mayor Rosenthal's alleged violation of the Open Meetings and Records Act. I do not know whether Mayor Rosenthal violated the Act, but the Transcript makes it awfully difficult to determine the truth of the matter.

First of all, the Transcript's reporting on this issue is poorly supported and seemingly unfair. So far the Transcript has based its stories primarily on hearsay, and has presented no concrete evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the Mayor. Furthermore, in the initial story on this topic, Mayor Rosenthal was, it appears, not given a fair chance to respond to the accusations against her. The story included no statement from the Mayor, and the reporter never even mentioned whether she attempted to contact her.

Secondly, the Transcript's July 13 editorial, "A giant step backward," takes a stand against Mayor Rosenthal that is remarkable for its vehemence, especially since the Transcript's editorial positions are almost always more cautious than this one is. The combination of an aggressive critique of the Mayor and weak reporting makes for a particularly aggravating example of a poor editorial, which leaves readers searching in vain for better substantiated reasons for the apparent outrage.

At the same time it acknowledges that City Attorney Jeff Bryant has found no violation of the Open Meetings Act, the Transcript's editorial observes that, "appearances of not being open and transparent don't inspire trust in our local government." This is indeed true. However, the Transcript's reporting on this issue leaves me asking whether it is the Transcript's reporting and editorial staff who are responsible for creating an appearance of dishonesty where none exists. I wish I knew the answer, but I am afraid it is hard to find in our local newspaper.
