NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
On July 28th, 2013 the Transcript ran an article titled “Pigs are non-traditional pets.” In it a veterinary professor advocated that people wanting to adopt a pot-bellied pig visit a “responsible breeder.”
That’s a curious statement from someone in a field supposedly devoted to caring for animals. A thoughtful reader will realize that pigs, just like many other animals, often end up without a home or a family.
While there are not nearly enough of them, there are caring places that provide a place of refuge for these abandoned pigs. The closest one I know of is Serenity Springs Sanctuary and Animal Rescue near Denton, Texas.
Anyone wanting to adopt a pig into their family would be behaving much more responsibly if they provided a home to one of these abandoned beings instead of paying a breeder to bring more potentially unwanted pigs into the world.
When it comes to animals, the responsible behavior is adopt, don’t shop.
