Open hearts and wallets

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

As the holiday season nears, many of our neighbors and friends are facing cuts in their food budgets.

Despite our sluggish economy and lack of good paying jobs, except in the oil and gas industry, food stamps have been cut about $11 per person per month. This is an entire week of food for a family of four. Most food stamp recipients are children, the disabled, the elderly and the working poor. It is not lavish. Could you eat for $1.40 per meal?

Church food panties, food banks, Food Shelter and Mission Norman are helping the middle of each month now instead of the last week of the month.

What can we do to help? Open our hearts and wallets to help Food and Shelter and Mission Norman locally. Donate to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma for wider impact. Deer hunters, consider donating your deer to Hunters Against Hunger.

Finally, we can remember these cruel and unnecessary cuts to the poor when we vote for our representatives in 2014.
