NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Clint Williams should resign from Mary Abbott House if he is going to run for the Norman City Council. Mr. Williams announced his candidacy in the Dec. 11 edition of The Norman Transcript.
I am not personally acquainted with Mr. Williams. I read his impressive bio on the MAH website. I have no doubt about his personal qualifications and/or his desire to serve Norman. By all accounts, he is doing an outstanding job as executive director of MAH.
All of that is beside the point. The director of Mary Abbott House (whoever it might be) should not run for, much less serve on, the Norman City Council. It would be a conflict of interest that could adversely impact the wonderful work being done at the house.
By way of information, I have not only supported MAH, I had a substantial role in Hiland Dairy donating that property to its current use as the Mary Abbott House.
My position is in no way aimed at Mr. Williams personally. However, I want him to be aware that I will campaign against his candidacy. I am not promoting the candidacy of someone else in Ward 2. I do not know who is, or will be, running for that seat next spring.
In my email to Mr. Williams, I expressed the hope that he could believe me when I say that I am motivated only by my concern for the continuing health of the Mary Abbott House. The one member of the MAH Board of Directors with whom I spoke expressed the same concern. If Mr. Williams is going to run for city council in Norman, I urge him to first resign as CEO of Mary Abbott House.
