Report what is happening

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

This letter is for sports writers and sportscasters. I want to make three points.

First, in sportscasting on TV or the radio, please report what is happening on the field, court or mat. I realize you have colleagues with you, but your audience wants to know what’s happening, the score, time left, teams playing and such.

Second, on sports writing, often in the first account of the game played, the score isn’t given in the first paragraph.

The who, what, why, when and where should encourage the reader to continue. Too often the writer may know something of the sport, but the coaches have played the game and coached for many years. They are the experts. Winning and losing are why the games are played. Coaches deserve respect.

Third, there are two words in your broadcasting and writing that are overused. One is “issue,” and the other is “icon.”

We have many problems to address: poverty, school crime, health, etc. The word “icon” loses it valuable meaning when used to describe every building, art object or person.
