Spring is Here — Awake

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

Spring is here. Spring. Spring is a time of awakening. If so, are we aware of the needs of our fellow Oklahomans? Let us look at our lives.

If we are aware, surely we can see that we have no clear and definite plan to build storm shelters at our schools to protect our children, yet we seem concerned with millions to be allocated to rebuild our state capital building.

Last year’s severe tornado striking Moore should have been a sad wake up call to protect our children. Our governor has no plan to build storm shelters for our children in our public school system. Any school left without a storm shelter should be closed.

Are we aware of the thousands of young women, this very day, sitting in prison cells for drug abuse? Are we not human; we all make mistakes. Let us reach out to these women with centers of help, not using tax money for more private prisons but for rehabilitation centers to help these women in directions towards their families and their children. Private prisons seem to be very flourishing business these days, approved by our governor.

Are we aware of thousands of struggling Oklahomans living without any medical insurance coverage because our governor failed to extend Medicaid to cover these thousands of needy Oklahomans.

Do we not refer to our government “as a government by the people and for the people?” Elections are coming soon. If our government is not a government for the people the its our duty and obligation to step forward and vote for a government that is truly a government for the people. We the people speak.
