NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
I urge you to vote no on the Sales Tax Increase.
Contrary to how it is being marketed this is not solely about Public Safety.
If you read the ordinance http://www.normanok.gov/sites/default/files/Features/NT%20O-1314-33%20Entirety.pdf you will see language such as “to the extent feasible” and “such other lawful purposes”. This gives the City Council, Mayor and Staff the wiggle room and ability to spend YOUR TAX MONEY on a variety of wish list items.
If you read the minutes of the Public Safety Sales Tax Committee you will see multiple attempts to use these funds for other purposes than originally intended.
There is currently about a $7 million overage in the account. If you look at the projected income and the currently outlined expenses in the new tax it appears that over the next 10 years there is the potential for up to $20 million dollars or more in overage.
With the new tax language the Mayor and City Council will be able to spend this on whatever pet project they come up with.
The current tax does not expire until 2015. This gives the Mayor, City Council and Staff plenty of time to go back and draft an ordinance that limits this to Public Safety only.
