Public needs renewal

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

As a professional first responder, I live each day knowing how critically important a sound public safety communications system is. In Norman, I have the privilege of serving with the great men and women of EMSStat. We depend on a reliable, technologically sound emergency communication system to support what we do and to save lives. I support wholeheartedly the proposed renewal of the Public Safety Sales Tax, because Norman cannot afford to ignore the critical emergency communications system which is proposed as a critical capital project in the PSST renewal.

When a person facing a crisis situation calls 911, the last thing he or she expects is a busy signal, a delay in the call being answered, or a dropped relay call. That might be fine when you are placing an airline reservation, but not when you need emergency medical attention. Norman Police Communication Officers routinely provide potentially life saving pre-arrival instructions to bystanders to begin providing aid before any responders arrive. The renewal of PSST will add much needed communications dispatch personnel and will replace the current emergency communication system which will be totally obsolete in a few short years.

I have also had the privilege of serving on the citizen oversight committee which meets monthly to review the current expenditures of the Public Safety Sales Tax. Because of that birds’ eye view of the city’s performance, I can say without reservation that the City Council has been unwavering in its commitment to public safety. With the renewal, the citizens oversight committee will continue to be empowered to insure the city’s accountability to public safety.

Now is the time to act. Your life or that of a loved one may depend upon the choice we make on April 1. Please vote yes.
