Cuts to food stamps should not be made

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

Wanda Jo Stapleton has written an excellent letter in The Norman Transcript titled “Five vote for stamp cut.” She pointed out that all five of our Oklahoma congressmen voted for House Resolution 3102 cutting $40 million from this program.

Another point needs to be made. I am a disabled Korean combat veteran, and this bill gravely concerns me, since it not only affects so many children but — according to Jon Soltz, chairman of VoteVets.org — it includes 170,000 veterans now receiving food stamps. He also said 3,000 active duty service members would be affected.

Many children are affected by various government programs Republican representatives are trying to cut and, according to Ms. Stapleton, our congressmen voted to send more children “to bed hungry.”

I speak from experience of poverty and hunger from suffering as a child during the Depression. I have always had a compulsion to store more food than I will ever need. I was deeply affected by seeing other children and people without food or places to live.

We need to vote for legislators who will spend their efforts in getting the economy growing and creating more jobs and not cutting medical and food programs for the poor and our veterans. An improved economy would help solve the government debt and spending problems.
