NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Norman Public Schools should be applauded for its creativity.
While many educators around the world are struggling to find effective ways to combine the advantages of online courses with those of classroom teaching, NPS has combined features of the two that perhaps no one before has thought of combining.
Here’s how it works. Students have to show up at Norman North at 8 a.m. each Monday through Friday in a summer month, where they are placed in front of a computer to work on their online course. Then they are picked up at noon.
Making them wake up early and come to school each morning teaches students self-discipline. Providing no guidance or instruction from teachers in the subject matter teaches students self-sufficiency.
Requiring parents to pick up students at noon nicely breaks up the workday for parents. And as a bonus, parents have to pay for these online summer courses (unlike academic-year courses), so this relieves parents of excess income that they don’t know what to do with.
