Give Longhorn Mountain the protection it deserves

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

People and companies continue to place financial gain over concern for sacred sites of our native people.

There are now plans to destroy the Kiowa Indian tribe’s sacred Longhorn Mountain for the gravel that can be stripped from it. I am appalled, and others should be, also.

I am a disabled combat veteran and am proud to have served with my Native American comrades, from practically every tribe in Oklahoma, that served so honorably in the famed 45th division in the Korean War and World War II.

In memory of those that were wounded and died, we need to place every effort to preserve those things sacred to their people.

Many of us in Oklahoma have the blood of native people flowing through our veins. I am proud that my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have this heritage and can be proud of it.

Contacts and petitions are being made to federal and state officials and legislatures that ask them “to protect Longhorn Mountain by recognizing it as a historical and Native American sacred site.” I ask all Oklahomans to support this cause.
