NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
The government is legally right in the U.S. Government vs. Bundy Ranch matter.
They did everything by the book. But that’s not all there is to it. The problem is we have some really bad laws. Bundy’s neighbors followed the law, and the government put all of them out of business. So obeying the law even when the law is really bad doesn’t solve the problem.
It’s absurd for the U. S. government to own 80 percent of the land in a state the size of Nevada. And the same problem exists in most western states. Yes, the federal government does own the land. Bundy thinks the state owns the land because he doesn’t recognize the sovereignty of the United States. That’s an extreme view but one he’s entitled to hold, but not necessarily one we need to submit to.
When we have bad law, the first thing we need to do is fix the law, then enforce the law when we have reasonable laws to enforce.
That’s equally true whether we’re talking about the 55 mph speed limit, land reform or immigration reform.
Let’s hear no more of this nonsense about ”Let’s enforce the laws we have before we think about changing them.”
