NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Thursday’s editorial cartoon, suggesting that there is no other course on climate change open to a city than prayer, while funny is also misleading and needlessly pessimistic.
There are many ways that cities can first prepare, adapt and even reduce the effects and costs of climate change.
They can get help and advice from federal and international groups such as the International Council for Local Environ-mental Initiatives (ICLEI) and/or the Department of Energy’s Sunshot program, which was the subject of a series of presentations in the OKC area last winter.
They can take measures to cope with the main problems — drought, heat waves, flash floods and storms. Serious water management, community and home xeriscaping, shelters, improved handling (capture?) of heavy rain runoff, and solar paneling to reduce air conditioning costs and to help avoid future brownouts or power outages.
And then, of course, prayer is still an option.
