NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Forty-five years ago this month, as a senior at Norman High School, I had the honor and privilege of performing in the Norman School Spring Band Concert. Of course, at the time, I didn’t realize that it was an honor and privilege. Eighteen-year-olds don’t think about things like that. Last night I got to do it again.
Thank you to NHS band directors, Jim Meiller and Joel Deardorf, for allowing me and several other “mature” folks to join the Norman High band for one more night. While they don’t get their names in the newspaper, as do the athletic coaches, these band directors work just as hard. They have carried on the good work of Harry Haines, James Middleton, John Morgan, Bob Lee Kidd and others.
Looking back, I now realize how much I benefited from my eight years in the Norman Public Schools Instrumental Music Program. Thank you again to the band directors and the kids who made us feel welcome. I learned two lessons that night. First, we have a lot of great kids in Norman. Second, after practicing for a month, I can still play a little. As another local musician said, “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”
