More arts organizations deserving of press

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

I am writing to urge you and your staff to examine your policy with respect to press coverage for organizations that perform classical music in Norman. I refer particularly to two groups of professional musicians, the Arioso Consort and the Oklahoma Community Orchestra, who can’t seem to attract your attention even with well-planned press releases and photographs. Egregiously in the case of Arioso Consort, their concert on April 7 received only a passing mention in the paper despite their having submitted ample publicity materials. The Oklahoma Community Orchestra’s April 16 performance similarly went unnoticed in the Transcript.

Meanwhile, the Norman Philharmonic Orchestra receives front page publicity and even applause in Transcript editorials! The Transcript gives the impression that Norman residents need and want only one music venue, and you have selected that one for us.

This reminds me of your recent education about sports coverage. Members of the community have worked hard to get you to cover local sports other than football. You have responded nicely; now you cover swimming, wrestling, soccer, gymnastics, tennis and golf, among others. This is a community that highly values the performing arts. We could so much better support the arts if you would do our part in bringing them the publicity they have earned.
