NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

Let’s say you live in Newport, R.I., and your dear old grandma lives in Evening Shade, Ark. (yes, it exists). For the low price of 46 cents, you can mail her a loving hand written note which adds a personal touch that no e-mail can match. The price is lower than any item found at the Dollar General store.

I have been hawking the mailbox since my boyhood days and still look forward to each day’s delivery more than 50 years later. My message to those Republicans in Congress who continue to hammer away at the post office: Keep your cotton pickin’ hands off the U.S. mail.
