The Norman Transcript
NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
I’m writing to point out and protest the example of poor and implicitly biased and misleading “journalism” represented on Page A5 of The Norman Transcript in your edition of Jan.19.
The captions describing the photos you ran under the heading “Differing opinions” did nothing to objectively refer to the reason for this particular meeting of the Norman Tea Party. The theme of the meeting was “Stop Obamacare Penalties Now.”
I was in attendance for the entirety of this “event,” as was your photographer/so-called “reporter.”
Was he willfully blind, not to have observed the display of this title for the duration of the presentations made? This local rally was one of 12 rallies being hosted statewide during January in preparation for a same-themed rally Feb. 4 at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
Our local coordinator, Mallory Harvey, described our meeting thus: “We had a great Stop Obamacare Penalties Rally on Saturday. The following four legislators came to address us: Rep. Bobby Cleveland, Rep. Aaron Styles, Rep. Lewis Moore (Conference Committee on States Rights chair) and Sen. Rob Standridge. They were very informative, and we had over 100 people in attendance. Sorry if you missed it; we had an excellent meeting.”
Sen. Standridge brought up the issue of an Article Five Amending Convention in his brief presentation to our group.
However, the primary purpose of the meeting was discussed by Bob Donohoo, and that was to encourage our legislators to support all efforts to oppose and eliminate Obamacare in Oklahoma.
The reporter seems to have ignored the whole point of the meeting. There was no true debate about Article Five at the meeting, only remarks by Standridge, Don Crosson and Bob Donohoo.
Dr. Harvey said at the end of the meeting that since there seems to be so much interest in the subject of state-initiated strategies to reign in overreaching federal laws, the Norman Tea Party would like to sponsor a debate on those strategies in the future.
As the reader can ascertain, your photo headings did not present any sort of balanced idea of what occurred during our meeting. One might reasonably infer that your presentation smacks of a “progressive” attempt to distort/discredit the purpose of our Norman Tea Party.
You also disseminate implicit disinformation by associating Sen. Standridge directly with the Norman Tea Party. All of these legislators attended as invited speakers.
While I hear quite a few complaints about how liberal The Norman Transcript is, I personally believe you do a generally good job of presenting objective information. The captions for these photos are a blatant example of bad journalism. You can do better.
