NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
To reiterate: The Affordable Care Act is the law. The purpose in writing my previous letter was twofold: Inform interested citizens of some of the benefits now available under ACA (as I listed) and give a contact website and telephone number for those who have questions or want to enroll in the ACA.
The official U.S. government number is 1-800-318-2596. Set up an account or get personalized help at healthcare.gov. Contact Oklahoma Policy Institute at OKpolicy.org for state information. These numbers are now available and health care coverage can start Jan. 1, 2014.
Implementing the ACA will ensure citizens have the right to affordable health care as offered in other civilized countries around the world.
Food for thought: Some 600,000 Oklahomans have no safety net in case of serious illnesses or accidents. If they have a chance to buy low-cost, or subsidized, insurance, they won’t be subjected to one terrible emergency room visit away from losing everything they own.
Also, without ACA, insurance premiums of those who have insurance will continue to rise to cover both ever-spiraling medical costs and medical costs of uninsured citizens who lack funds.
