Everyone knows that our political system is broken. So we are all looking for ways to improve it. Here is a modest suggestion.
Make politicians responsible for their actions (like the rest of us).
Here are a couple of examples, one for each party, to make the discussion nonpartisan.
Let’s send John Boehner a bill for $24 billion. He was primarily responsible for the government shutdown, and $24 billion was the cost to the American people, according to Standard and Poor’s.
President Obama has continued the drone strikes in Pakistan, despite overwhelming evidence that they are doing more harm than good. He owes us at least $5 billion, and that covers only the known costs. Actual costs are certainly much higher.
These politicians may not be able to pay these amounts (although they have rich friends). But basic fairness requires that our actions should have appropriate consequences.
