NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
On Monday evening, the Norman League of Women Voters will host a forum on education from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Norman Public Library, Rooms A-B, in Norman.
The event will be part of the league’s annual fall meeting. Speakers at this event include Brook Meiller, literacy director for Norman Public Schools, who will provide information on Common Core, and Rep. Scott Martin, who will discuss education funding for our state. Attendees at the event also can ask the presenters questions.
Common Core takes full effect in Oklahoma schools this year, and it changes the way teachers teach, the way kids learn and the way Oklahoma measures school performance. What do you need to know about this drastic change in Oklahoma education? And is Common Core good or bad for our state?
Parents, educators and members of community are encouraged to participate in this opportunity to discuss the initiative and educational funding for our children and our classrooms.
The League of Women Voters is a citizens’ organization that works to improve our government and engage all citizens in the decisions that impact their lives. The League is nonpartisan. However, we are well known for hosting candidate forums. We undertake this because we believe deeply that the public should hear different views on the issues facing our communities. An honest and respectful sharing of ideas is vital to the functioning of American democracy.
