Don’t be afraid of traffic circles

NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:

My wife and I recently returned from a three-week vacation in Ireland and Scotland. As you are probably aware, they drive on the left side of the road in Ireland and Great Britain. They also use traffic circles as their primary means of moving traffic through major intersections.

For more than 3,000 miles of driving, we successfully navigated single and double-lane circles going in the opposite direction from what we consider normal, and we experienced no problems.

I pass this information along due to the controversy associated with proposed traffic circles along Lindsey Street and the uproar when traffic circles were proposed along Porter Avenue. Norman installed a traffic circle on East Main Street. I navigate this circle frequently and I’ve never experienced any problems.

I don’t understand the opposition to traffic circles in Norman. We traversed hundreds of them during our European vacation and we found the traffic circles to be a far superior means of moving traffic through busy intersections.

I think we need to get over our fear of traffic circles and move forward with including them in future road projects.
