NORMAN — Editor, The Transcript:
Interestingly, Rep. Tom Cole, in his Transcript letter (10/5/2013), states that he realizes that the shutdown will not end the Affordable Care Act, but he voted with fellow GOP House members to try just that.
President Obama declared long before this vote that he would not be bullied by a threat of a shutdown or a default resulting from a GOP refusal to raise the debt limit. Nevertheless, Cole voted for the former and has not said what he would do about the latter. Then he said Obama is unreasonable to not negotiate under the threat of both forms of extortion.
Rep. Cole does not mention that Speaker Boehner continues his promise not to bring up for vote any bill that is not approved by a majority of only the GOP representatives.
Nor does Cole admit that if Boehner brought up for vote a bill that just continued funding the government at the current rate that it would pass in the House with bipartisan support. This unreasonable and undemocratic practice of blocking this vote is why the government is shutdown.
Cole also complains that the GOP House cannot pass just those programs they want to fund. So much for how reasonable he is.
My hope is that this will be the end of any legislators being willing to threaten to shut down the government or to have us default on our payment of obligations to get their way. Let’s do away with the debt limit, which is not in the Constitution, and make a default unlawful.
