Republican senators voted to kill the Veteran’s Job Bill. Only five Republican senators voiced support for the bill. The 58-40 vote was two votes shy of the required 60 majority to override the Congressional spending authorization restrictions. Most of the senators against the bill allegedly were more motivated by their opposition to President Obama than consideration of the needs of our returning military.
Currently, more than 720,000 veterans are looking for work, and there are unfunded openings such as in the trades and for police, firemen and teachers. A jobs bill would open these positions to help the veterans as well as helping our communities. The cost of implementing this bill is a small price we owe to pay for those who volunteered to go to war.
Sen. Tom Colburn rationalized his objection by blaming the budget and the debt. No mention was paid to our greater debt to the men and women who put their lives on the line since 9-11.
So much for supporting our troops.
