NORMAN — If you’ve ever wondered what the inside of the National Weather Service building looks like, you will have a chance this weekend.

The annual National Weather Festival sponsered by Fowler Volkswagen will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the National Weather Center, 120 David L. Boren Blvd. at the corner of Hwy. 9 and Jenkins Ave. The event is free.

The festival will be showcasing the many weather related organizations and activities in central Oklahoma. This is the eighth year for the festival which usually draws a crowd of 5,000 throughout the day.

“It’s a big open house to get kids excited about science, specifically weather,” said Kyla McMoran, Norman Chamber VP of Communications .

At the festival there will be hourly weather balloon launches, children’s activities, storm research vehicle displays, amateur radio demonstrations, a Storm Chaser Car Show and weather related information and products.

The National Weather Center will also be open for tours, including the National Weather Service forecast operation areas.

“There’s a lot of different companies housed in the weather center that set up booths,” McMoran said. “And the university does some outreach programs.”

She said it is mainly a big open house that helps them excite children about the field of weather.
