Board of Education meets in new digs

NORMAN — Despite the cold weather, Norman Public Schools’ Board of Education got comfortable and cozy inside its new digs Monday night.

The group met in the board room of the newly remodeled Administrative Services Center, 131 S. Flood Ave. The new building was the last project to be completed from a 2009 bond issue that totaled $110 million and made improvements to all NPS schools.

Administrators moved into the new building during NPS winter break, the week of Dec. 23, and renovation of the old building began. Last night was the first time the Board of Education conducted business in the new building.

Offices in the new building include a main reception area, board room, superintendent’s office, assistant superintendent administrative services office, communication director’s office, curriculum center, athletics and Norman Public Schools Foundation.

Additionally, the district announced its plan to make up snow days that were taken last Thursday and Friday due to inclement weather. The district plans to make up the days lost last week by utilizing accumulated, extra instructional minutes to the school day.

The district missed three days in December and two days last week, for a total of five. Norman Public Schools has the ability to incur a total of 10 snow/inclement weather days without having to change any aspect of the 2013-14 calendar.

For the three missed days in December, NPS Board of Education opted to make up one day using accumulated additional minutes and to make up the other two days by using the first two designated snow days on the calendar. The first of those two designated snow days was Jan. 20, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The second of those designated snow days will be Monday, Presidents Day.

The board opted to not use extra minutes for all three days because there was concern this could be a severe winter weather season and those minutes might be needed later on, said Shelly Hickman, NPS public information officer.
