NORMAN — Norman kids and their parents slurped down frozen yogurt and gobbled up pizza while running around, playing games and flipping through KIDS magazine at Andy Alligators on Thursday night.
Perhaps not your typical uptight, swanky magazine launch party, but the perfect fit for The Norman Transcript’s newest publication “KIDS,” a bi-annual magazine focused on Norman kids that’s brimming with creative ideas for the whole family, as well as informational articles for parents. Besides free food, dessert and games, launch party attendees also enjoyed a photo booth with masks, hats and more as props.
Rebekah Collins, Norman Transcript senior advertising account manager and the force behind the new magazine, said she is happy to finally have her dreams realized.
A parent of two boys, Collins said she hoped the magazine would be read by both parents and children.
“My vision was an interactive magazine using social media so that parents can be part of the dialogue, such as submitting jokes their children have told or asking doctors questions,” she said. “I really believe there is something for both parents and kids in the magazine and that everyone will find it entertaining. I wanted a parent to be able to sit down at a park or the doctor’s office and read with their child.”
The first issue of KIDS features a variety of the best Norman has to offer families in the community and includes everything from an article about new Norman Public Schools Board of Education member Chad Vice to a calendar of upcoming events to teacher Q&A and features on fatherhood and a local child care service.
Darren and Becca Wyatt, parents of a 7-month-old and a 7-year-old, said they were excited about the magazine because of the calendar of events.
“You can find out about things you might never know about that you want your kid to be involved (in), anything from something free and fun to a martial arts class,” Darren Wyatt said. “I think I could read this with our 7-year-old, especially if he saw his teacher featured. He’d love that.”
Amber Fife, photographer and mother to a 1, 4 and 6-year-old, shot KIDS’ first photo shoot and said she was honored to be a part of the collaborative project.
Fife said the photos have a spring feel and she tried to make all the clothes pop.
“I love that the magazine is a blend and there is something for the little ones to the big kids,” she said.
Mary Webb, mother to a 2, 5, 7, 9 and 11-year-old, said she also was excited about the calendar of events and hoped in the future, the magazine would include a list of restaurants that offer kids’ specials.
Even though it was her dream, the development of KIDS was a community effort, Collins said.
Kyle Allison, general manager of Andy Alligators, said Andy Alligators wanted to contribute to the magazine and launch party because it’s all about kids.
“It’s a publication that Norman needs to showcase all that it has to offer,” he said. “Andy Alligators is all about kids, so it’s a natural fit.”
Paul and Kelly Wright, EarthFruits Yogurt franchise owners who served yogurt and toppings at the launch party, said they wanted to support the magazine because kids drive their business and giving back to the community is important to them.
“Kids are some of our best customers,” Kelly Wright said. “We’re excited about the magazine.”
KIDS is available on shelves now. The next issue of KIDS will be available in August and will focus on back to school and the fall season.
