Resident loses dog in fire Thursday at Summerfield Apartments

NORMAN — A young woman sat on the curb sobbing outside of Summerfield Apartments as a fire official broke the news that her dog died in an apartment fire Thursday.

Norman Fire Department was dispatched around 2:24 p.m. at 902 E. Lindsey St. The fire was contained to two units. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 10 minutes, Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey said.

“Everyone’s been evacuated. Everyone’s safe,” apartment manager Jade Gilbert said.

No injuries were reported, but a woman’s dog died, Bailey said. As he broke the news to the dog owner, a woman nearby tried to console her. Others standing nearby shook their heads in sadness when they heard the news.

Upstairs resident Josh Moore stood barefoot in the grass watching firefighters extinguish the fire and put out hot spots after residents were evacuated. He had been trying to sleep when he smelled something burning.

“I never actually saw any flames,” Moore said. “I just thought my roommate was burning dinner.”

The next thing he knew, someone was banging on his door and his roommate said they had to get out of there because there was smoke coming into the house and the building was on fire, Moore said.

“I got up and got my pet taxi because I have two cats, but they scattered,” he said.

Someone got a hold of one of the cats, which is now safe at his friend’s house, but the other one took off down the street, Moore said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Bailey said. About 26 firefighters responded, as well as Norman police and EMSStat.
