I-35 traffic shifted today

NORMAN — Allen Contracting and Manhattan Road and Bridge Company, under contract with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation on Friday shifted the two southbound lanes of I-35 west onto their new configuration.

The traffic shift will allow the contractor to construct a portion of the permanent roadway of I-35 for both north and southbound traffic. The traffic shift was to have been completed by 6 a.m. today.

Additionally, beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 7, Manhattan Road and Bridge Company will begin to place the remaining bridge beams for the Main Street Bridge over I-35.

The work, which will require the temporary closure of lanes on I-35, will be completed between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.  During the day, all four lanes on I-35 will be open to traffic. Weather permitting, the contractor expects to have all the beams installed by 6 a.m. on Thursday.

Construction on the I-35/Main Street Interchange Project began Jan. 7, 2013 and is expected to be completed by May of 2014.

In a related project, Sherwood Construction Company shifted the two northbound lanes of Interstate 35 one lane to the west. The shift placed traffic on the alignment needed to construct the State Highway 9 Interchange Project.

Traffic was reduced to one lane northbound temporarily during the lane shift to provide the contractor safe working distance to remove the barrier wall.  Both northbound lanes were to be reopened by early today.

Construction of the $12 million State Highway 9 Interchange Project over I-35 began Nov. 18, 2013.  As a part of this construction, Sherwood Construction Company will also build the first phase of the Lindsey Street Widening Project drainage structure.

This is the southernmost section of the drainage structure that will eventually remove the stormwater runoff from Lindsey Street east of I-35.

The project should be complete no later than December, 2014, but the contract includes a 75-day contract incentive clause and could be completed as soon as Sept. 14.
