NORMAN — Newly elected Norman City Council members will be sworn in at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The city meeting schedule will be light this week because of the holiday, but in addition to the swearing in, a special thank-you reception for all volunteers serving on Norman’s many boards and commissions, as well as a good-bye to three outgoing city council members, also is slated for Tuesday.

The reception will start at 5 p.m. with words by the mayor at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to the swearing in of new council members, outgoing members will be honored in a special ceremony. Each outgoing council
member traditionally selects a park within his or her district for a bench dedication. The council also will select a mayor pro tem, representatives for the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments and a trustee for the employee retirement board.

Cleveland County Commissioners will meet as usual at 1 p.m. Monday. The Cleveland County Courthouse will be closed July 4. City offices also will be closed, but Norman’s trash pick up will remain on a regular schedule during the July 4 holiday.

Norman fireworks will start at 9:45 p.m. Thursday at Reaves Park, 2501 Jenkins Ave. Other activities
start at 4 p.m. and will include food booths, a baby crawl, nickel find, moon bounces, pony rides and more. Full Circle will perform from 5-7 p.m. and Nicnos will play from 7:30-9:30 p.m. The community event is free to the public.

A Celebration in the Heartland is an outdoor festival in Moore from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 4. The free event at Buck Thomas Park features a variety of food and entertainment including inflatables, children’s tent, arts and crafts, car and bike show, sand volleyball tournament and live music. Festivities conclude with a fireworks display at dark.

Norman sanitation services, compost facility and the transfer station will
remain open during the holiday. The Compost Facility at 398 Bratcher Miner Road is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Transfer Station located at 3901 S. Chautauqua Ave. is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Also this week, many Norman sanitation customers will receive blue recycling polycarts.

The new recycling program will begin the week of Aug. 5 and includes cardboard recycling.

The Norman Transcript offices will be closed on Thursday in honor of the July 4th holiday. Offices will be open during regular hours on July 5.
