NORMAN — Dr. Carol Pandak, division manager of PolioPlus at the Rotary International Office in Evanston, Ill., will speak at this year’s University of Oklahoma Rotaract Club PolioPlus benefit dinner.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Molly Shi Boren Ballroom inside the Oklahoma Memorial Union. Cost is $30 per ticket.

The OU club, sponsored by the Norman Rotary Club, raised about $3,000 in 2012 to support Rotary Interntional’s efforts to fight polio. The virus, which mostly affects children under 5, is now restricted to Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

In 1985, Rotary International created PolioPlus — a program to immunize all the world’s children against polio. To date, Rotary has contributed more than $1.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has challenged Rotary International to raise $200 million in exchange for matching grants totaling $355 million. At the end of 2011, Rotary met that goal, enabling more than $555 million to be donated.

The OU Rotaract Club has planned a week of PolioPlus activities at the University of Oklahoma, highlighted by the Wednesday benefit banquet. More than 60 people are expected to attend. Other activities during the week will be designed to help educate OU students about the importance of eradicating polio.
