Okla. lawmaker on reserve duty near shooting scene

DUNCAN — State Sen. Corey Brooks was on Navy reserve duty in Washington, D.C., Monday when at least 13 people were killed and several others wounded in a shooting rampage.

Brooks said he was about four miles from the scene of the shooting, which caused widespread panic in southeast Washington.

“It’s a great tragedy,” Brooks told the Duncan Banner in a phone interview. “Any time our men and women, our civilians are put in harm’s way on our soil, it’s a big threat we need to address.”

Brooks, a Republican lawmaker from Washington, Okla., is a former active duty Navy officer who spent a year leading intelligence teams in Afghanistan. He said he was familiar with the place within the Navy Yard where the shooting rampage occurred.

Police said the suspected shooter — Aaron Alexis, 34, from Fort Worth, Texas — was among the dead. Authorities said Alexis was a military contractor.

It was unclear through most of the day if Alexis acted alone. Police put out an alert for two more potential shooters dressed in military clothing, but one had been located and cleared.
