NEW COLUMBIA, Pa. — A Greyhoud bus plowed into the rear of a tractor-trailer in the middle of the night Wednesday on Interstate 80 in rural central Pennsylvania, killing a woman passenger and injuring 45 others.
Officials said the bus driver and three passengers were in critical condition and two other passengers were in serious condition.
They were seated at or near the front of the bus when the crash occurred at 1:41 a.m., state police said.
Thirty-two passengers were treated and released from five area hospitals. The driver of the tractor-trailer flatbed rig was not injured. He was hauling baled garbage.
A score of ambulances responded to the crash in the westbound lanes of the highway near the exit to Williamsport, Pa., home of the Little League World Series.
State police said the bus carrying 49 passengers was bound nonstop for Cleveland, Ohio, from New York City.
