NORMAN — Several local arts organizations were recently awarded grants from Allied Arts as a part of its Educational Outreach and Capacity Building Grants Programs.
Norman recepients were Cimarron Opera, Norman Arts Council and The Sooner Theatre. An additional 25 Oklahoma arts and cultural organizations also received grants, for a total of $117,304 in grants awarded.
These funds are aimed at ensuring that the community’s children have access to a variety of arts experiences and that local arts groups receive resources they need to remain strong.
Allied Arts’ Educational Outreach Program provides grants to qualified central Oklahoma arts nonprofits to help expand the scope and reach of youth arts programs. This year’s recipients include a partnership between [Artspace] at Untitled and Big Brothers Big Sisters for “littles” to tour the gallery, participate in an art workshop and take home an art kit; an afterschool arts program for Millwood Arts Academy students at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum; a program allowing the Oklahoma City Museum of Art to send a teaching artist to provide art therapy to patients at OU Children’s Hospital; and scholarship programs at Oklahoma Youth Orchestras and The Sooner Theatre. More than 272,500 children will experience the arts as a result of these funds.
Capacity Building Grants provide funding to central Oklahoma arts nonprofits to build their organizational capacities in a number of areas, including fundraising, board development and volunteer management. Funding from this year’s grants will help provide strategic planning sessions and financial audits to ensure long-term sustainability of the organizations; professional development opportunities for staff and board members; and technological advancements to improve website, database and software capabilities.
The deadline for the second round of Allied Arts grants for the 2013-2014 year will be January 24, 2014. For more information or to apply, visit
