School board to discuss dropouts, election, awards

NORMAN — A report on student dropouts, changes in board policies on support personnel leaves, a call for an election in the No. 4 board seat and numerous student and faculty awards are on the agenda for Norman’s Board of Education Monday.

The five-member board meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 201 W. Gray Street.

The board will honor National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, commended scholars, National Hispanic Scholars and National Achievement Program participants.

Additionally, Paula Palermo, Catherine Wilson and Beth Kahn will be honored for individual awards. The Stacy Group received the People’s Choice Award from the Oklahoma State School Boards Association for its architectural design of Reagan Elementary.

The board will hear a report from Katie Fitzgerald, executive director of the Center for Children and Families, Inc., about ways the group partners with Norman schools.

Other items on the agenda include:

— A revision in enrollment policy related to transfer of dependent children of active duty armed services personnel.

— A first quarter report on district professional development

— A report on Oklahoma Parents as Teachers

— Consideration of the meeting calendar for 2014 and the call for an annual election for the five-year term in Board position No. 4 currently held by board president Don Shandy.
