Art museum presents Day of the Dead festival

NORMAN — The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is partnering with University of Oklahoma Student Life to present a Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Street Festival. The festival is 6-10 p.m. Nov. 1, outside the museum, on the southeast corner of Boyd Street and Elm Avenue. Admission to the event is complimentary and open to the public, though some activities will have a small fee.

The Day of the Dead is a holiday recognized in many Latin American countries and communities to celebrate the lives of those who have passed away. The Day of the Dead Street Festival combines food, music and art by including remembrance altars, live performances and hands-on art activities. Food will be sold onsite by OU Housing and Food Services, and complimentary art activities include tissue paper flowers and papel picado (paper banners).

Sugar skulls and face painting also will be available for an additional charge.

The festival is a one-day celebration for all ages. Children and visitors attending the festival are encouraged to wear Halloween or other traditional Day of the Dead costumes.

The Day of the Dead Street Festival is held in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibition “Libertad de Expresión: the Art Museum of the Americas and Cold War Politics.” The exhibition examines how the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C., advanced Latin American art and democratic values during the Cold War. “Libertad de Expresión” opened on Oct. 5 and is on display at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art through Jan. 5, 2014.
