Norman police officers recognized for saving lives

NORMAN — Three Norman police officers received Life-Saving Awards at an Oklahoma police awards banquet Tuesday.

Norman Police Department Officer Lee McWhorter and Master Police Officers Darren Strauss and Jess Sumner were recognized at the ceremony for saving lives in 2012.

Strauss and Sumner were awarded for saving a man from a house fire on Feb. 3, 2012. After the officers helped three people out of the first level of the house, which was fully engulfed in flames, they were told another man was stuck upstairs. They quickly ran upstairs and carried the man out of the burning house.

“He wouldn’t be alive if they hadn’t saved him,” said Norman Police Department Major Kevin Foster, who presented their awards.

McWhorter responded to a motorcycle accident on Aug. 25, 2012, where he found the driver suffering from a leg injury caused by the accident. McWhorter wrapped the man’s bleeding leg in a tourniquet, and though the man ended up losing his leg, doctors told McWhorter that tourniquet saved the man from bleeding to death.

The Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police and Oklahoma Police Chiefs Training Foundation recognized 24 additional Oklahoma police officers for various achievements at the annual awards banquet, which was hosted at Norman Embassy Suites.
