Junior League of Norman raising awareness for city dog park

NORMAN — The Junior League of Norman will host an event to raise awareness for the community-supported dog park and animal well-being in April.

“Paws for Parks” is set from 2 to 4 p.m. April 14 at the Norman Community Dog Park on 12th Avenue Southeast and High Meadows Drive.

Every year, new members of the Junior League put on a class project. This year, they chose to do something new and close to their hearts.

“We are all are animal lovers,” said Katelynn Calonkey, co-chair of the event. “We felt that this was something the league hasn’t really done before and we wanted to try something new and something we were all passionate about.”

Calonkey adopted her dog from Second Chance Animal Sanctuary, where she used to volunteer as a child, she said.

The event will feature a “meet and greet” with some of Second Chance’s “most popular dogs.” Calonkey said the dogs will not be available for adoption that day, but those interested are encouraged adopt on Tuesday when Second Chance is open.

“We’re really trying to raise awareness about animals that are really cute and need to find homes,” Calonkey said.

“It’s an opportunity for us to shed some light on a park that a lot of us frequent and is really important to us and to a lot of people in the community,” said Ashley Miller, another event co-chair.

An on-site veterinarian will offer micro-chipping for $25. Refreshments provided will include chicken fingers, courtesy of Raising Cane’s.

A prize will be given for the person who donates the most Purina One lamb and rice dog food at the event. The prize includes a dinner for two and a one-night stay in the Embassy Suites Presidential Suite. The food donated will benefit Second Chance.
