NORMAN — The Norman Office of Emergency Management through the Norman Citizens CORPS will conduct free training for Norman residents from Thursday through Saturday at the Norman Fire Training Center, 2207 Goddard Ave. in Norman.
The hours of training are Thursday and Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Community Emergency Response Team program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities.
When emergencies happen, CERT members can give support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims and organize volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members also can help with non-emergency projects that help improve the community’s safety.
The CERT course is taught in the community by a trained team of first responders who have completed a CERT Train-the-Trainer course.
CERT training includes disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, and light search and rescue operations.
Completing the course qualifies citizens interested in volunteering for emergency operations to apply for the Norman Emergency Response Volunteer program.
Two more classes are planned, but dates have not been determined.
