Shoppers line up early for free groceries at Sprouts

NORMAN — The new Sprouts Farmers Market in Norman, 555 W. Main St., hosted a Sprouts Sprint on Tuesday with two Norman residents competing for prizes.

Wednesday morning, people lined up for a chance for free groceries promised to the first 200 people in line when the store opened at 7 a.m.

Sprouts Farmers Market was founded in 2002 and is one of the largest and fastest-growing natural foods retailers in the country, with more than 150 stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.

Annual revenues in 2012 approached $2 billion, and Sprouts now operates more than150 stores, with 15 more scheduled to open this year. The stores employ nearly 12,000 people. More new locations are planned for 2014.

Sprouts offers farm-fresh produce, natural meats, scoop-your-own bulk foods, more than 2,000 gluten-free products, vitamins and supplements, and a selection of natural, organic and mainstream grocery items.

The Sprouts concept of “healthy living for less” has been the cornerstone of the founders, the Boney family, since they opened their first produce stand in 1943.

The Norman location fills a void left by Hobby Lobby in the downtown area when the local craft chain moved further west on Main Street in 2007. In the interim, the site was temporarily occupied by the University of Oklahoma College of Architecture while its new building was constructed.
