Poets to visit OU

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma and World Literature Today announced two events featuring distinguished poets, Gerald Stern and Anne Marie Macari.

A poetry reading and reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Performing Arts Studio at the Norman Depot.

A conversation with the authors will be hosted from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday in the Lab Theatre in the Old Science Hall, room 200, at the University of Oklahoma.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the authors, hear them read poems and ask them questions in an interactive environment.

Gerald Stern is the author of 17 poetry collections and has won the National Book Award, the National Jewish Book Award and the Wallace Stevens Award, among others. In 2006, he was a nominee for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature.

Stern's visit to the OU campus comes on the heels of an announcement by the Library of Congress that he has been named the winner of the 2012 Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry. He will receive the award in Washington, D.C., during a ceremony Jan. 24, 2013.

Anne Marie Macari won the APR/Honickman first book prize for her book “Ivory Cradle,” as well as the James Dickey Prize from Five Points. Her poems have been published in numerous magazines, and she is the author of three books.

No pre-registration is required for the events, but seating is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The events are open to the public and free.

Founded in 1927, World Literature Today is a bi-monthly magazine of international literature and culture published at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. World Literature Today serves the international, state and university communities by achieving excellence as a literary publication, a sponsor of literary prizes, and a cultural center for students.
