NORMAN — Way back in my elementary school days, I used to think October was the longest month of the year to get from the 1st to the 31st as I waited for the candy collecting day.
Now it seems like every year, there is more overlapping of Halloween and Christmas decorations throughout the stores once Labor Day turns on the calendar and the entire fall is the holiday season.
This year — as the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Norman Chamber of Commerce, the city of Norman’s Parks and Recreation Department and some community stakeholders — the months of October and pre-Thanksgiving November may evaporate quickly as we are preparing to launch a holiday website.
Once the city council approved the ice rink to be located at Andrews Park earlier this week, we wanted to maximize the promotional opportunities to bring visitors to Norman throughout the holiday season.
By saying that the rink will be open from the day after Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, we can build on that base to add all the other annual (or even inaugural) events that take place.
We can publicize Norman as a festive weekend getaway during the holiday season to do Christmas shopping, see holiday light displays, watch a parade, enjoy a holiday concert, make an art walk or stroll through holiday open houses, all while having the chance to take the family out to the ice rink.
The first step is organizing all of the events in one location. ChristmasInNorman.com will be a page dedicated to the season’s events. The Norman CVB will organize the event listings for the site, so we need you to send your holiday event to info@VisitNorman.com as early as possible so we can launch the website in a few weeks.
