NORMAN — “Education First” is the theme for the 2013 Fall Forum for Local Education Foundations, slated from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave., on the University of Oklahoma’s Norman campus. Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 8 a.m.
For 23 years, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has presented the Fall Forum as the state’s premiere event for school foundation leaders, school administrators and teachers seeking to improve the quality of public education in their communities. This year, the foundation is partnering with the National School Foundation Association to open the event to school foundations leaders throughout the region.
The featured luncheon speaker for this year’s forum will be Jonah Edelman, co-founder and chief executive officer of Stand for Children, an education advocacy organization devoted to improving public schools and closing the achievement gap. In 1996, Edelman helped organize Stand for Children’s founding rally in Washington, D.C., which was attended by more than 300,000 people. He has been recognized as one of the nation’s top 11 education advocates by TIME.com. Oklahoma is one of 11 states nationwide that has a Stand for Children Affiliate office. Oklahoma staff members will be presenting a session as part of the Fall Forum.
“This year’s Fall Forum offers 18 breakout sessions presented by respected state and national leaders in school foundation and nonprofit leadership,” said Fall Forum Chair Stewart Ryan. “Foundations are encouraged to bring several participants so they can take advantage of all the information and resources available.”
Topics covered at this year’s forum will include how to start a school foundation, best practices for successful foundations, using social media to promote your organization, board development, funding sources and relationships, strategic planning, innovative programming ideas and a networking session focused on successful fundraising activities. National fundraising experts will offer sessions on “Developing and Articulating an Effective Case for Support,” and “The Science and Art of Fundraising.” Participants can learn about a successful school foundation mentoring program in “It Takes a Village: Community Partners Striving for Success.” The National School Foundation Association will offer free individual consulting after lunch.
The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence staff will lead a session on its programs for teachers and students, highlighting opportunities for partnerships with school foundations. A panel of Oklahoma Medal for Excellence-winning educators will present “Put the Learner First,” focusing on innovative approaches to teaching. Also planned is a session on innovative uses of electronic tablets in the classroom.
The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence will present its Outstanding Program Awards to Local Education Foundations during the luncheon. Receiving plaques and monetary awards of $1,000 each will be the Life 101 Seminar for Graduating Seniors sponsored by the Cheyenne Educational Foundation and the Induction and Support for Novice Principals Program sponsored by the Foundation for Tulsa Schools.
Fall Forum registration is $50 per person if received by Oct. 8 and $75 for late registration. Luncheon-only registration is $25. Session descriptions and registration forms are available online at ofe.org.
