Sooner Carpet celebrates 20 years in business

NORMAN — Jim Mitchell founded Sooner Carpet Cleaning out of his duplex in 1993 with nothing but a van. The company will celebrate its 20th birthday this month.

During those 20 years, Jim and Carrie Mitchell have expanded to cover much more than carpet cleaning.

The Mitchells said they couldn’t be more excited about celebrating their anniversary in partnership with the community.

“We’ve come a long way since those days,” Mitchell said. “We have the community to thank for our success. I couldn’t be happier to celebrate our 20th birthday in Norman.”

Mitchell has loyal customers dating back to 1994. As Sooner Carpet expanded, the advent of cell phones revolutionized the way Mitchell conducted business. Being able to tend to customer calls instantaneously provided him with a leg up on the competition. Soon, Sooner Carpet was growing at an exponential rate.

In1995, the business relocated. Mitchell hired more employees and added a second truck to better handle the growing number of clients.

Growth continued at a fast rate, and Sooner Carpet Cleaning soon outgrew its space. Mitchell purchased the company’s first commercial space on Research Park Boulevard, where Sooner Carpet is located today.

With more space and employees came bigger business ventures. Mitchell expanded to include chimney, air duct and dryer vent cleaning.

Soon, a greater level of education was needed to keep up with growing business demands. In 1998, Jim received certification for Fire and Water Damage restoration.

By 2000, the business had grown to a point where public relations and marketing help was needed. Carrie Mitchell encouraged the creation of a new logo, company handbooks, policies and advertising changes. The Mitchells also became dedicated to the spirit of philanthropy.

A long-standing member of the Norman Chamber of Commerce, Jim Mitchell takes helping others to heart.

“Serving the community has always been a top priority to us,” he said. “We feel the need to give back to the community that has given us so much.”

The Mitchells began giving back through Rotary, the Chamber and numerous Norman Public School endeavors.

Over the years, Sooner Carpet added an office manager, experienced construction contractor and became an IICRC Certified Firm, requiring Jim Mitchell to pass numerous certifications and provide education to his staff. Continually, Sooner Carpet added various services to their repertoire, including water restoration, tile and grout cleaning, carpet repairs and power washing.

Despite the numerous changes, Mitchell said Sooner Carpet Cleaning maintains an attention to detail and customer service, offering 24-hour emergency service and full-service restoration.

This year, Sooner Carpet became one of eight businesses in the state to achieve ASCS certification. The certification allows Sooner Carpet Cleaning to continue doing what they love: restoring homes to perfect condition, serving the community and helping families in their times of need.

Throughout the last 20 years, Sooner Carpet has undergone numerous changes, including the HVAC ASCS Certification. Sooner Carpet is one of only eight businesses in the state to have such an honor.

Jim Mitchell thinks of it as just another way to better service his customers.  

“Our No. 1 goal for the past 20 years has simply been to provide the best quality service to our customers day or night,” he said.

Soon Carpet Cleaning is hosting a customer appreciation reception from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mitchell’s Jewelry, 2201 W. Main St., for the company’s anniversary.
