Howell to retire from Veterans Center

NORMAN — Norman Veterans Center Administrator Christy Howell will retire effective Nov. 1.

Officials within the Human Resources Department confirmed Howell had filed the required 60-day notice period for her retirement. Howell has served the agency since October 1981. Howell had originally planned to retire earlier but later extended her stay. She served as an assistant administrator in Norman in 2003. In November 2009, she was appointed as the administrator.

Martha Spear, former executive director of the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs, is on leave pending her retirement Nov. 1. Currently, John McReynolds is serving as interim executive director.

The Oklahoma Senate and House of Representatives are conducting hearings into problems at the ODVA and the seven Oklahoma veterans center.

Howell had requested retirement prior to the beginning of the hearings.
