Children checked after crash

NORMAN — More than a dozen children on a YMCA field trip were transported to Norman Regional Hospital after a minor bus accident just before noon Wednesday, according to Norman police. There were no serious injuries, police and hospital officials said.

Capt. Tom Easley said the collision was reported about 12:30 p.m. near West Lindsey Street and College Avenue. Approximately 15 bus riders were transported to the hospital.

Parents were contacted and notified of the collision, police and YMCA officials said.

The bus had 38 children, ages 7 to 10, on board, as well as five adults. The children were participants in a YMCA day camp and on their way to Reaves Park for a picnic and an afternoon of outdoor play, according to a YMCA statement following the accident.

“Our understanding, based on information provided by Norman police officers responding to the incident, is that two other vehicles were involved in a collision in front of the bus transporting our kids,” said Joe Paslay Jr., CEO of the Cleveland County Family Y. “One of those vehicles came into the lane the bus was traveling in and struck the bus.”

Paslay said any child who complained of soreness in the neck, back or head was taken to the hospital for evaluation. One child was picked up by a parent at the scene, and the remaining 20 campers were taken to a nearby church to rest in an air-conditioned facility and eat lunch.

Norman Public Schools sent a bus to the church to transport the children from the church to the Y. Children transported to Norman Regional Hospital were being assessed, and many have already been released, hospital officials said. All children at the hospital now have a parent or guardian with them.

While they waited for full assessment, Norman police officers distributed stuffed animals to children and Norman Regional staff gathered sandwiches for lunch. The Y staff was on hand at the hospital to answer questions and assist parents and their children.
